Letter To Parents--School Response to Flu With guidance from the Catholic Schools Office and health professionals our school administration has been working on our response to the recent outbreak of the Swine Flu. We are working to supply all classrooms with alcohol based hand sanitizer. We will be reminding students of the importance of washing their hands, covering their mouths when they sneeze or cough and avoiding unnecessary personal contact. All classrooms will be provided with basic first aid supplies. If your child is sick, do not send him/her to school. Page 27 of the school handbook describes situations where students will be sent home, or where students are not allowed to be at school due to health reasons. I have instructed our school principals to be vigilant in sending home students who demonstrate illness or any flu-like symptoms. The symptoms of Swine Flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with Swine Flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. If your child has any of these symptoms, please do not send him/her to school or to school events, such as the Carnival. At the present time, I do not know of any cases of Swine Flu in Pittsburg and only two cases have been reported in Kansas. I am cautiously optimistic that this recent outbreak will not impact our school year adversely. However, please know that our administrators are preparing our response should drastic measures such as closing the school be required. Thank you for helping our school prepare appropriately. The information about Swine Flu which will be used to justify school-wide decisions will come from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, www.cdc.gov/swineflu and from conversations with local and diocesan health professionals. . By God’s Graces, John C. Kraus President of Schools/Director of Administration SMC Fundraising Philosophy & Form Please read the following philosphy of fundraising & philanthropic donations to be incorporated into the School-Family Handbook. The official form to use for all fundraising events on campus is below. Philosophy. St. Mary’s Colgan Catholic Schools are well aware of the need to solicit funds for various school-related activities. As a principle of Stewardship, it is important for students to provide assistance to help fund some of these activities. However, there also is a need to balance these fundraising activities/philanthropic donations with the burden these place on our school families, the parish, and community. In order to maintain a balance, plans for activities, whether new initiatives or annual events, must be approved in writing by the administration. In approving these activities, the administration will strive to balance the need for funds with the number of students benefiting in light of the spiritual, educational, and social mission of the school and the parish. Procedure. Forms to request approval of fundraising activities/philanthropic donations are available in the building offices and on the school’s website. These forms must be completed and returned to the office no less than two weeks prior to the proposed start date for the activity. The Fundraising/Philanthropic Request Form must be completed by any student organization, class, sponsor, teacher, coach, parent group or school supporting organization (Booster Club, Fine Arts Committee and Home & School Association) desiring to hold such an activity. Class Accounts. A class account is started when a class reaches 6th grade and the fund stays with the class through graduation. The class account funds are used to cover various school related expenses such as the senior class group photograph, class gift at graduation, hosting prom in junior year, misc. expenses as part of 8th grade, etc. Class account funds are obtained by donations when students serve a funeral Mass in 6th grade, proceeds from concession stand at junior high basketball games and various fundraising events by students in grades 7 – 12 (examples include value card sales, candle sales, etc…) The class account is maintained by the Administrative Assistant at the High School with funds utilized according to the school’s disbursement policy.
